New York Construction Accident Lawyer at The Perecman Firm Comments on Fatal LIRR Tunnel Collapse

New York construction accident lawyer David Perecman comments of the Long island railroad tunnel collapse that killed one worker.

NEW YORK, NY, December 01, 2011 /Industry PR News/ -- A tunnel worker was killed by falling concrete in a Long Island railroad tunnel construction accident in New York, late last week.

"Tunneling is an extremely dangerous job. Tunnel workers face many of the same hazards as miners," said New York construction accident lawyer David Perecman, the former head New York construction accident lawyer for the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, and a lecturer on construction accident law.

Michael O'Brien was working on a new LIRR station being built under Grand Central Terminal in New York. The construction accident occurred deep under Park Ave. reported the New York Daily News (11/18). According to the New York Daily News, a LIRR employee said a portion of the roof caved in.

O'Brien had to be rushed through a network of tunnels to a waiting ambulance after the New York construction accident. He died in Bellevue Hospital, said the New York tabloid.

More than two dozen tunnel workers have died in New York City construction accidents over the years, said the WSJ (11/18).

According to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), tunnel workers must take specific safety precautions and undergo extensive training in order to prevent New York construction accident injuries and fatalities. Potential dangers to underground construction workers include: reduced light conditions, difficult or limited access and egress, potential for exposure to air contaminants, floods, explosion hazards and fire hazards.
